The chair of childhood diseases was founded on July1, 1993. From the time of foundation till November 1, 1999 the chair had been headed by D.M, Prof. Markyevich V.E.. In July 1, 1999 the chair was reorganized. 2 chairs of pediatrics - №1 and №2 were founded. The basis of the chair is the Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital and city polyclinics.

Educational Activity

Members of the chair staff constantly improve their methodical and educational activities. The chair gives theoretical and practical knowledge to IV, V, VI year students. They study the following disciplines: “Faculty Paediatrics”, “Hospital Paediatrics”, “Medical Genetics” and “Homoeopathy”; VI year students study a series of lectures dedicated to all kinds of childhood diseases: “Polyclinical Paediatrics”, “Pathology of the Senior Age Children” and “Pathology of the Junior Age Children”. A computer classroom equipped with 6 computers was opened at the chair aimed at improving theoretical knowledge of the students. They can use computer tests in all the parts of paediatrics elaborated by the chair collaborators. These tests totally fit with modern standards on doctors’ training. Situational tasks and test questions in all themes for practical classes were elaborated. More than 30 educational-methodical aids and 1 educational-methodical manual - “Neonatology” was issued by the chair collaborators and aimed at optimisation of educational process. A manual “Bronchial Asthma” and a monograph “Children Laboratory Diagnostics” are being prepared for publishing in association with other faculty chairs and paediatrics chair №4 of the National Medical University. 5 educational video films were produced by the chair. The chair collaborators took an active part in preparation of some chapters of the book “Medicine of Childhood”. Students were winners of the All-Ukrainian Olympiads in paediatrics for 8 times.

Field of Scientific Interests

Chair scientific activity meet the North-Eastern Ukrainian practical requirements and is a part of the National programmme “Man’s Health Protection”. Chair collaborators research the influence of unfavourable environment on children’s and youth’s health. The researches of aetiologenesis of early anemia of the newborn from the expectant mother with anemia are carried out. Also various mechanisms of anemia development of the newborn and the role of erythropoeze regulators in these processes (erythropoetine, cytokins, fibronectine and the tumour necrosis factor) are under research. The prevalence of childhood bronchial asthma and hyperlipidemia in the North-Eastern region of Ukraine is being investigated. The chair cooperates with Kharkov Research Institute of Children Health Protection and Kharkov Microbiology Institute named after Mechnikov on the problems of childhood bronchial asthma prevalence.

> Major Scientific Achievements

1. Influence of unfavourable environmental factors on the prevalence of children’s vegeto-vascular derangements was investigated.
2. Prevalence of thyroid gland’s hyperplasia, state of health and microelements content of children who live in the polluted areas of Sumy Region (consequences of the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station disaster) was investigated.
3. Content of erythropoetine and the influence of erythropoeze regulators on healthy newborn children and children with early anemia was investigated for the first time.
4. Content of feritine, ceruloplasmine and their influence together with external factors on the health of expectant mothers and on the development of early anaemia of the newborn children was investigated.
5. Blood circulation of the organs with different variants of hypoxic and ischemic encephalopatia of the newborn children.

More than 200 scientific works were published in magazines and sets of works for the time of existence. 5 Candidate theses, a thesis for a Doctor's degree were defended and 3 Candidate theses are going to be defended in the nearest future.

Medical Activity

The chair collaborators give consultative and medical help on the basis of the Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital and Polyclinic №2. They carry out night duties in the regional centre of urgent medical help, preventive inspections in the city polyclinics and take regular departures to Regional Medical Institutions. They also fulfil the cure of the Sumy Regional Medical Institutions, Children's Home and the Centre of Children’s Rehabilitation with nervous system’s lesion. Scientific and practical conferences on paediatrics for the regional doctors are constantly carried out. Clinical, clinical and anatomic-pathological and scientific and practical conferences, seminars on raising the skill level of the regional paediatricians with the aim of introducing new prophylaxis, diagnostics and treatment methods of child’s diseases. 6 informational lists of the Ministry of Health Protection of Ukraine were issued by the chair collaborators. They have also created “Asthma-School” where trainings for the children who are ill with bronchial asthma regularly take place. New methods of treatment the children with anemia, bronchial asthma and also 6 innovations were introduced by the chair collaborators.

Hospital and instructive work is actively carried out. They also appear on TV, broadcast and give publications to the regional nespaper “Medicine and Health”. The Head of the chair is the member of the editorial board of the newspaper “Medicine and Health”.

Head of the chair D.M., Prof. Markyevich V.E. partakes actively in the work of the Regional Management Colleges of Health Protection and Examination Board of the Regional Management Colleges of Health Protection.
