The chair of paediatrics ¹1 was founded on November 1, 1999 after the reorganization of the childhood diseases chair into chair of paediatrics ¹1 and ¹2 under the direction of D.M., Academician of Ukrainian Academy of National Progress Sciences, Prof. Smiyan A.I. the chair included 3 lecturers: Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Professor Bynda T.P., and Assistants – Romaniuk O.K., who defended her Candidate thesis in 2000 and in 2001 acquired the post of Assistant Professor and Markyevich O.V.

Educational Activity
The chair teaches 2nd - 6th year students of medical faculty. They study the following disciplines: “Propaedeutics of Child’s Diseases with Children Care” (2-3 courses), “Children’s Infections” (5th and 6th courses), “ Childhood Diseases” module “Polyclinical Paediatrics” (6th course) and discipline for choice “Nutritiology”.
The chair is equipped with technical educational aids. There are 4 computers, jet, dot-matrix and laser printers for testing of the students’ knowledge and also for scientific activity. Test programs in the studied disciplines (1580 questions) were elaborated. Computer tests are made for 100% of students.
4 textbooks with the stamp of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine were issued and aimed at improvement of educational process. 45 educational-methodical aids and 2 methodical recommendations have been published for students and doctors. 5 works dedicated to educational-methodical problems were published.
Field of Scientific Interests
Members of the chair staff investigate the following scientific problems: “Modern problems of children’s adaptation in different periods of life”, “Characteristics of the of the Sumy region’s children physical development state” and “Pathogenetical mechanisms of arising different critical children states” (including “Morphofunctional characteristics of the blood cells and liquor with the ill on central nervous system inflammatory affection”). There have been published 228 scientific works by the lecturers (90) works and 45 methodical tips have been published for the time of working in the SSU). The chair group has partaken in 17 International and 28 native congresses, conventions and conferences. With the aim of training future specialists there is a scientific students group at the chair. About 15 students partake in it annually. Students have presented 41 reports on chair finishing conferences.
Main Scientific Progress of the Chair
- 1 thesis for the Doctor’s degree was defended (Smiyan O.I., 1996).
- 1 Candidate thesis was defended (Romaniyk O.K., 2000).
- 3 monographs were published (Smiyan O.I. and co-authors).
- 3 textbooks were published (Smiyan O.I. and co-authors).
- 4 manuals were published (Smiyan O.I. and co-authors).
- Scientific reviews to the specialized Academic Councils of Kharkov, Dniepropetrovsk, Sympheropol and Zaporozhye, including 5 official opponents, 12 references on abstracts and 6 dissertation reviews at the University level were written.
Medical Activity
Professor and Assistant Professors carry out morning doctor’s conferences, rounds, clinical examinations at the departments of the Ñity Children’s Clinical Hospital and also conduct consulting activity daily. Assistant Professors fulfil night duty by means of sanatorium aviation. Assistants and clinical interns provide medical activity at the Ñity Children’s Clinical Hospital departments. Scientific and practical doctor’s conferences, doctor’s consulting committees and anatomico-pathological conferences are constantly conducted . 23 new diagnostics and treatment methods have been introduced into the health protection practice.
