Nervous Diseases, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry Chair with Medical Psychology and Narcology Departments

Head of the chair – Faina G. Kolenko, candidate of medical sciences, assistant professor . Nervous diseases, neurosurgery, psychiatry, medical psychology and narcology chair was founded in 1995 on the basis of I and II neurological branches of the IV city clinical hospital of Sumy, neuro-surgical branches of the Sumy regional clinical hospital, and the Sumy regional psycho-neurological clinic.

Chair Staff

Head of the chair - candidate of medical sciences, assistant professor Faina G.Kolenko. She graduated from Smolensk medical institute in 1970.

Soon she defended her Ph.D thesis. Since 1977 worked as the assistant at the nervous illnesses and neurosurgery chair of Smolensk medical institute, and since 1992 – has been an assistant professor of medical faculty of the Sumy state university, the head of the chair.

She has more than 65 printed scientific and methodical works, one invention, and four improvement suggestions.

Neurosurgery department is headed by the candidate of medical sciences, assistant professor Alexander A. Potapov. In 1985 he graduated from Ivano-Frankivsk medical institute. He worked as neurosurgeon in Sumy regional clinical hospital, since 1989 till 1992 – has studied at the clinical internship and postgraduate course.

In 1992 defended his Ph.D. thesis. Since 1995 has been working as a teacher, and in 2001 received the SSU assistant professor post. He has more than 45 scientific and methodical publications. At present times he finishes his thesis for a Doctor's degree.

Psychiatry department is headed by the candidate of medical sciences, assistant professor Arcady V. Kustov. He graduated from the Crimean state medical institute in 1973, then clinical internship. In 1992 defended his Ph. D. thesis.

He worked as the assistant head physician at the Sumy psycho-neurological clinic, and also as a regional psychiatrist. Since 1995 he has been occupying a post of the SSU assistant professor. Arcady Kustov is the author of about 30 scientific and 6 scientific - methodical works, and a manual. At present times works at the monograph.

Educational-Methodical Activity of the Chair

The chair teaches 3-5 year students of medical faculty. New technologies are applied in educational process: educational and supervising computer programs, module-rating assessment system. Since 1998 the clinical internship has been functioning where foreign and Ukrainian doctors study. 13 methodical recommendations, instructions for students and doctors, and the manual "Hypnosuggestible psychotherapy (traditional and Erichsen methods)” by assistant professor A.V.Kustov have been issued.

Research Activity

The sphere of scientific interests of the chair embraces the influence of environment factors on people’s health, vascular diseases, painful syndromes, cranial traumas, limiting mental pathology. The thesis for the Doctor’s degree of assistant professor O.O.Potapov, A.V.Kustov’s monograph are on their final stage.

Members of the chair staff take part in scientific-practical forums of Ukraine.

There exists a close cooperation with leading Institutes of the AMS of Ukraine, scientific-practical societies. Since 1995 the students’ scientific organization of the chair have been functioning where students carry out independent researches, take part in conferences, have publications in scientific editions.

Plenty of them became neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons and work in different regions of the country.

Medical and Consultative Activity

Assistant professors F.G. Kolenko, A.V. Kustov, O.O. Potapov provide actively big medical and consultative activity first of all in clinics: detours, emergency reviews of patients, consultations, and advisory consultations in polyclinic branches. Members of the chair staff give an urgent help at medical establishments of the city and region, monthly carry out conferences of neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists. They put into practice new methods of treatment and inspection of patients, prepare methodical recommendations and circulars for doctors.

Under the initiative of assistant professor F.G. Kolenko the consulting room for people with cerebrovascular diseases has been functioning since 2001 on the basis of the 4-th city clinical hospital with the purpose of improvement of medical service to the patients with a vascular pathology of the brain.

The clinic of nervous diseases is the center of preparation of young neurologists.
