The chair of infectious diseases with epidemiology course was founded in August, 1996. In June 2004 the courses of microbiology, virology and immunology were joined to the chair.
The founder of the chair was M.D Chemych., assistant professor, candidate of medical sciences. Since November, 1996 till May, 2003 the chair had been headed by Prof. Z.Y. Krasovytskiy, D.M.
M.D. Chemych, assistant professor had the following thesis topic: “Clinical and Pathogenic Evaluation and Correction of Blood Supply Disturbance of Mucous Stomach Membrane and its Functions with Food Intoxications”. He is the author of 140 scientific publications, has 18 years of pedagogical seniority and 20 years of medical seniority. He also has the highest doctor’s category.
Prof. M.M. Kaplin had the following thesis topic: “Immunological Characteristics of Suppurative and Septic infections under the Condotoins of Hemosorption Use”. He is the author of 120 scientific publications, has 38 years of pedagogical seniority.
N.I Il’yina, assistant professor, had the following thesis topic “Development of Resistance towards Streptomycin with Zonne Shigell under the Influence of Vitamins and Microelements”. She is the author of 102 scientific publications, has 37 years of pedagogical seniority and 42 years of medical seniority, has the highest Doctor’s category.
V.V. Lipovskaya, assistant professor :“Selective signs of pathogenic enterobacteria, their influence upon microbiocenosis of the intestine and immune status of the human ”; 13 scientific publications , pedagogical seniority - 13 years.

Educational activity
 Students of the 2nd 3rd 5th and 6th years of study get theoretical and practical knowledge at the chair. They study the following disciplines: “Microbiology”, “Virology”, “Immunology”, “Infectious disease”, “Epidemiology”, “Infectious tropic disease”. Since 2003 there exits internship in the specialty “Infectious Diseases”. Besides, physician-interns specializing in “General Practice - Family Medicine”, “Surgery”, “Paediatrics”, “Obstetrics and Gynaecology” and “Radiology - Diagnostics study at the chair.
Students and internship doctors are fully provided with modern educational and methodical materials, textbooks and scientific literature.

Scientific interests
The main directions of scientific researches of the chair of infectious diseases chair are acute infectious intestinal diseases and viral hepatites. The research works on the problems of acute dysentery and acute intestinal infectious diseases caused by relative pathogenic flora treatment are carried out.
The results of the chair collaborators’ researches have been reported in the International Congresses on infectious diseases in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Minsk, Vitebsk, New-York and Israel.
Andreychin M.A., Lutsuk O.S. and Chemych M.D. won silver medals at the National Economy Progress Exhibition.
Scientific progress of the chair collaborators is presented in the form of 3 patents and inventor’s certificates (Krasovitskiy Z.Y., Chemych M.D.), 16 rationalization proposals (Krasovitskiy Z.Y., Chemych M.D., Il’yina N.I.).
Major scientific achievements
The etiologic structure of acute intestinal infectious diseases in the Sumy region has been examined.
The peculiarities of acute dysentery with epidemic and sporadical forms of disease were discovered.
Discovery of inefficiency of the antibacterial preparations with acute dysentery.
High effectiveness of the use of modern enterosorbentes and probiotics in acute intestinal infectious diseases treatment.
Revealing peculiarities of clinic and having viral hepatites in contemporary conditions.
Medical and consulting activity
The clinic of infectious diseases is situated on the basis of the Sumy Regional Clinical Infectious Hospital (SOKIL). Its medical and consulting activity is carried out at two departments of SOKIL, aimed at hospitalization of hundred patients and cabinets of infectious diseases of the polyclinics ¹1, ¹3 and Medical and Sanitary department of JSC “Sumy Frunze NPO”. The chief physician of the clinical institution is A.O Snitsar., candidate of medical sciences. The clinical basis is equipped with modern apparatus for endoscopic diagnostics, apparatus for ultrasonic diagnostics and thermograph.
The laboratory research is carried out with the help of biochemical analyzer “Cobas Emira” and clinical analyzer “Cobas Micros”. Immunological and other modern researches are also carried out.
The department of hyperbaric oxygenation functions at the clinic equipped with fixed pressure chamber “OKA-MT”. New methods of infectious diseases’ treatment with the use of hyperbaric oxygenation, enterosorbtion, magnetic therapy and immune-modelling ways are widely used.
The regional program «Antihepatite» was worked out by the chair collaborators. In 2002 the Regional Hepathological Centre and Laboratory of Polymerize Chain Reaction were opened on the basis of the infectious diseases clinic. These improved much medical-consulting and diagnostic work in the region.
According to the proposition of the chair some reorientation took place. It consisted in the work in providing emergency and first aid on infectious pathology in the Sumy region and in Sumy (system of curators of medical institutions, work at the Society of Central Epidemiological Scientific Research). The column «Doctor's Outline» is regularly published in the newspaper «Medicine and Health».
Sumy Regional Scientific and Medical Society of Infectionists (SRSMSI)
The head of the society is M.D. Chemych, assitant professor.
The society started in 1996. The first plenary session of Association of the Infectionists of Ukraine and the Scientific and practical Conference were organized with participation of the representatives from the whole Ukraine.
Traditionally (twice a year) regional scientific and practical conferences are organized annually. The following specialists take part in the conferences: infectionists, therapeutists, pediatrists and neuropathologists. Doctors are provided with the following free conference reports publications and manuals: «Infectious Diseases: Classification and Schemes of Diagnostics», “Urgent Conditions in the Infectious Diseases Clinic” and methodical aids: “Acute Respiratory Viral Infections. Clinic, Diagnostics and Therapy”, “Meningoencephalitis: diagnostics and therapy”; summary of lections “Viral Hepatites. Toxoplasmosis”.
Z.Y Krasovitskiy. awarded with a medal of for active work in the SRSMSI and M.D. Chemych was awarded with a Diploma of the Infectionists Association of Ukraine.
