Faculty on the Work with Foreign Citizens

About 10,000 students, ordinators, postgraduate students study at SSU on more than 30 specialities.

The students of SSU traditionally take the largest number of prize places at All-Ukrainian Students' Olympiads among classical universities. The students-foreigners of Medical Department are among the Olympiads' prize-winners.

The graduates of SSU work in 15 countries of the world.

In 1991 Faculty on the Work with Foreign Citizens was founded at Sumy State University. More than 400 students, clinical ordinators, postgraduate students from the countries of the Middle East, South-Eastern Asia and Africa, the CIS and Russia have been studying at the department during this time.

At SSU foreign students have the opportunity to get the following degrees: Junior Specialist, Bachelor, Specialist, Master, Candidate and Doctor of Sciences.

The training of foreign students includes language and fundamental training (preparatory courses), special training (basic departments), clinical and postgraduate studies.

The term of training at the preparatory courses is 10 months. The training begins in September-November.

The pre-university training of foreign students is carried out in four directions:

• medical-biological;
• engineering-technical;
• humanitarian;
• economical.

The language training (Ukrainian or Russian for choice) is conducted in the groups of 5-7 students. General subjects are studied in the groups of 12-14 students. The modern intensive methods of training are used in the educational process.

The educational process at the preparatory courses of Foreign Student's Department of SSU is provided by the teaching staff of the Russian Language Chair and the teachers of general subjects who have got the rich experience of work with foreign students both individually and in the standard training programme. The training is carried out according to the specially developed training programmes rated for different terms - from 3 till 12 months.

The students are fully provided with scientific literature, methodical recommendations and materials.

Recently the following books have been published in order to help the foreign students:

• training -methodical aid "Phonetic Exercise-Book";
• "Training Exercises in Grammar" (elementary course);
• "Materials on Speech Development (social and cultural spheres) for 2-4-year Students".

The integrated adapting courses on the additional study of Ukrainian and Russian, short- term (2-3 weeks) individual business courses, the courses on the methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language are developed at the department.

A hostel, a library, reading-halls, a cafe, a dining-room, gymnasiums and stadiums, a swimming-pool are at the students' service.
