The Chair of Applied Fluid Aeromechanics

Department was founded in 1968. Since the time of foundation till now has been the graduation department. Now it belongs to the engineering faculty of Sumy State University. The staff of the department comprises 35 collaborators, including: staff of professors and teachers - 13 men, scientific-technical collaborators - 9, post-graduate students - 4, assistant staff - 5, highly qualified workers - 4. The teaching staff of department includes 3 professors, doctors of sciences and 9 assistant professors, candidates of sciences.

The department has graduating status in two specialties: hydraulic and pneumatic machines, and energy management. The department has been preparing the specialists in the first specialty since its foundation, in the second - since 1999. Concerning the first specialty, the tuition is provided both in internal form and by correspondence, concerning the second one - only in internal form. For the baccalaureate "Engineering mechanics", the department teaches the subjects of general engineering: hydraulics and hydraulic drive, history of engineering activity, theory of technical systems, energy saving technologies in various branches of industry. The branch of department in VNIIAEN (Scientific Research Institute of Atomic and Energy Pump Building, Sumy) works since 1987, its staff comprises 5 persons. In addition to the teaching process, the department carries out scientific research, experimental and design projects. Since the foundation of department, its scientific specialization is pump building, that is research and development of pumps for energy, oil and gas complex and other branches of industry. The last ten years, together with pump building, the works on creating the wind energy plants are carried out, and activities in the field of energy saving are developed still further.

Material and technical base of department comprises two specialized teaching rooms, six teaching laboratories, the scientific research laboratory of turbomachines, the room of course and graduate design, the library room of special scientific-technical and methodical manuals and literature.

As the main scientific-technical achievements of the department we may consider several directions of development. Yet in the USSR the department was considered to be the main organization in development of free vortex pumps. At present, the activity in this direction is developed to the creation of the general theory of the working process of vortex turbomachines and turbomachines of new design of this principle of action. The new direction of development of blade pumps is the creation of these pumps with the arbitrary by magnitude and sign velocity moment before an impeller. This approach happened to be especially effective for decreasing the weight and dimensions of high-speed pumps. Besides, the principally new turbopump plants with hydraulic drive and autonomous power supply, both in borehole fulfilment and for fire-fighting equipment, were created at the department. The department deals consecutively with the problems of block-unit design of blade pumps, including the creation of new types of working elements - screws, high-dimensional floating centrifugals and others. Simultaneously with pump equipment, the high-efficient experimental samples of orthogonal wind engines of small powers for small wind velocities. For recuperation of energy of compressed gas in the systems of distribution of natural gas, the principally new jet-reactive and vortex pneumoturbines were created.

As for the teaching process and the scientific activity, the well-known specialization of department since the times of USSR is the pump building. The most well-known are the monographs and teaching manuals of the first head of department V.V. Malushenko, relating to the theory of working process and designs of blade pumps. Also widely known are the monographs on dynamics and strength of centrifugal pumps and on sealing equipment of Prof. V.A. Martsinkovsky. The teaching manuals of Prof. S.D. Kostornoy on calculation methods of research of turbomachines, as well as Prof. N.I. Volkov on aerodynamics of wind engines, Prof. I.A. Kovaliov on free vortex pumps and so on are well known too. In general, the library of scientific-methodical elaborations of the department comprises dozens of titles. At present time, intensive activities on scientific-methodical supply of new specialty "Energy management" are being carried out.

The department is accredited with IV (highest) level of accreditation and is entitled to prepare the bachelors, specialists and masters. The post-graduate courses and courses for Doctor’s degree by the specialty "Hydraulic machines and hydraulic and pneumatic units" are permanently available at the department. The specialized academic council for the defense of Ph.D. theses in the above mentioned specialty functions too.
